Only a short time ago, the internet was more a novelty than a helpful tool. But times have changed, and most of us heavily rely on the internet in one way or another. Web3, a more decentralized and user-friendly version, could become a reality, giving the average person more privacy and rights over their data and experience.
What Is Web3?
Web3 isn't a piece of physical technology or cutting-edge software; it's more of a theory or idea about the internet's next generation and how the future will look for us all. We're using Web2, a much more polished and refined version of Web1 from the mid-1990s.
Experts define Web3 as "data will be interconnected in a decentralized way, which would be a huge leap forward to our current internet generation (Web2), where data is mostly stored in centralized repositories." In the beginning, the worldwide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee aimed to make this new tool more democratic, open, and intelligent for everyone.
Many tech experts hope this next version of the internet is a much more intelligent, almost human-like way technology can operate. All the apps, platforms, and programs we rely on are relatively centralized. A single company or even person controls how we access these resources, which is something that could change for the better shortly.
Applications for Web3: Voice-Controlled AI
Apple has led the tech world with such creations as "Siri," a voice-controlled AI application. This tool has become quite intelligent in several years, expanding its abilities dramatically from its first appearance on the iPhone 4S model.
Siri uses speech recognition with sophisticated AI to perform different complex commands. Users can use Siri, Amazon's Alexa, or Google Home to find their nearest favorite restaurant, book a doctor's appointment or find their favorite song. With Web3, all this and so much will be possible; seeing what the future holds will be exciting.
My Two Cents
As time marches on, we'll see more and more of how Web3 can change the world as we know it. The future could be bright, from giving all users a more customized browsing experience, intelligent AI applications, and an overall decentralized structure.
Hopefully, all users have sovereign rights over their data, allowing people everywhere to have a better sense of privacy. It can be challenging to envision right now, but as these changes creep into our lives, we may all wonder how we lived without such things.
