Listen up if you're in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom. Cybersecurity experts are ringing the alarm about a new ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) syndicate, Black Basta, with over 50 people in the USA falling victim in the last two months.
A report released by Cybereason states that "Black Basta" targets a range of industries, including manufacturing, construction, transportation, telcos, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, plumbing and heating, automobile dealers, undergarments manufacturers, and more."
A further breakdown of the industries that suffered the most carnage is as follows: manufacturing (14%), real estate (11.1%), logistics (8.2%), professional services (7.1%), and trade (5.5%), with the operators specifically singling out companies in the U.S. (58.4%), Canada (7%), the U.K. (6.6%), Germany (5.8%), France (3.9%), and Italy (3.1%).
Research has shown the majority of all attacks zeroed in on American businesses (37%), followed by Germany (3%), then Switzerland (2%), and finally the UAE (1%), along with the Netherlands, Spain, France, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, and India (all at about 1% each).
Experts state that although this ransomware is still being refined and further perfected, it shows deadly potential even in these early stages. Since February 2022, Black Basta attacks began showing up with news from underground discussion boards about this new ransomware used to attack corporations and being quite successful in breaching company networks.
