As of April 2022, Cloudflare announced they abruptly halted a deadly DDoS, a distributed denial of service, attack reaching 15.3 million requests per second (RPS). This cyberattack was significant because it was likely one of the "largest HTTPS DDoS attacks on record."
"HTTPS DDoS attacks are more expensive in terms of required computational resources because of the higher cost of establishing a secure TLS encrypted connection," Cloudflare's Omer Yoachimik and Julien Desgats said. "Therefore, it costs the attacker more to launch the attack and for the victim to mitigate it."
The unnamed Cloudflare customer, who operates a crypto launchpad, was used for jumpstarting and generating buzz around new cryptocurrency projects. This DDoS attack is known as a "volumetric DDoS attack," where the name of the game is to quickly overwhelm the victim's network with high amounts of malicious traffic, hoping they will cave to the hacker's demands or lose everything.
