The internet can be terrifying for those new and still learning the ins and outs of technology. This fact can be especially actual for the elderly, who can be susceptible to scams and online threats. In 2020, just in the United States alone, cybercriminals made off with over 1 billion dollars from victims 60 and older.
Here are Some Examples
The reason seniors are more vulnerable is mainly because of not being entirely well-versed or up-to-date on the latest gadgets, lingo and news in the tech space. As things change rapidly, even if you're young, it's almost impossible to keep up with everything. Here are some of the most common online threats affecting seniors.
1. Malware
Malware is specifically designed software that is used to damage computers and devices to steal information or money from victims. The most typical malware types are ransomware, trojans, and spyware.
2. Data Breaches
A data breach is when a person's private information (such as email addresses, usernames, passwords, and even credit card numbers and social security numbers) is released to the world or dark web for financial gain.
3. Scams
Hackers are always looking for their next target. In the case of scams, they're out to find ways to intimidate, scam, or lure victims into giving them money under the guise that the scammer says they're from the bank or legitimate business.
4. Identity theft
Lastly, identity theft is a common ploy many criminals use, where they steal someone's information and attempt to sell it to the highest bidder.
