Opinion: What Musk's Twitter Deal Could Mean for Us All

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

If you've been following the news, you might have come across that Elon Musk is working on buying Twitter. The Twitter deal is booming and will rake in a jaw-dropping $44 billion, but it does leave many with some concerns and questions about free speech.

An excellent payday for Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, who believes the platform is the "closest thing we have to global consciousness."

At the moment, Musk has continuously stated he is all for free speech and isn't too worried about whether Twitter makes money or not, but only time will tell. But for many, Twitter and free speech seem like an odd pairing at first glance. With the platform involved in issues with the likes of Trump, some say the platform should curb discussions.

For most of us, Twitter plays an overbearing role in freedom of speech, with many users simply reading a post and taking it as fact and then later defending that exact point without research. Thanks to the platform, everything from journalism, academics, and what it means to debate is now in question.

But according to the almighty Musk, Twitter is not disrupting freedom of speech or debates. He says it's the new "digital town square," where everyone can come and discuss the day's news. The truth is that Twitter is showing that it's become far too challenging to manage, with messages of hate, violence, and misinformation becoming quite common.

I guess that for Musk and his devoted followers, Twitter will be less about legitimate discussion and more of a free-for-all where everyone is screaming and terrorizing one another.

Thinking back to his Tesla groupies, who fanatically attack anyone with a less than positive word to say about the company, this platform should be full of the same types, without a shadow of a doubt.
